Mobile apps

iOS and Android from one codebase.

React Native apps that share logic and types with your web platform, designed and built by the same team, and taken all the way through review to the App Store and Google Play.

Most businesses need a good website. Some need an app.

01 — When an app earns its place

An app earns its place when people use the thing daily, need it offline, need the camera or location, or need to be reached by notification. If none of those apply, a fast web application on the phone is cheaper and better — and we will say so.

When an app is the right answer, one codebase for both platforms is the right way to build it. Our team has worked on more than twenty mobile apps for agencies and their clients, and the pattern that holds up is the same every time: shared logic with the web, native where it matters, and a release process that survives the app stores.

What we build.

02 — What we build
  • One codebase, both platformsReact Native for iOS and Android, sharing business logic, types and API clients with your web application. One team, one release.
  • Native where it mattersCamera, location, biometrics, push notifications, offline storage — the things a browser cannot do, done properly.
  • Designed for the phoneNot a shrunken website. Navigation, gestures and states designed for how the app is actually held and used.
  • Accounts and syncThe same user, the same data, on web and mobile. Sign in once; pick up where you left off.
  • Store submission and reviewListings, screenshots, privacy declarations and the review process for both stores, handled. Rejections happen; we have seen the reasons before.
  • Releases that keep comingOver-the-air updates for the small things, store releases for the big ones, and monitoring so a crash reaches us first.
03 — How it runs

How it runs.

Every project runs the same five steps, and you see working software every week from the first sprint.

  1. 01CallHalf an hour. You describe the business problem; we tell you what we think it takes.
  2. 02Scoping sprintOne to two weeks. We work out what the system is, who uses it, and which features come first.
  3. 03PlanScope, architecture, sequence and cost in writing before any production build starts.
  4. 04Build in the openOne team designs, builds and tests. Working software on a staging site every week.

Questions about mobile apps.

04 — Questions

Do I need an app, or would a website do?

+

Often a website would do, and it is cheaper. An app earns its place when people use it daily, need it offline, need the camera, location or biometrics, or need to be reached by notification. We will give you a straight answer on the first call — including “no”.

Why React Native rather than native Swift and Kotlin?

+

One codebase for both platforms, shared with your web application, built by one team. For the products we build — business tools, customer apps, portals — it is faster, cheaper to maintain, and indistinguishable to users. Where a feature genuinely needs native code, React Native lets us write that part natively.

Can the app share a backend with our website?

+

Yes, and it should. Same API, same accounts, same data. Most of our mobile work is a mobile front door onto a platform that also has a web one.

Do you handle App Store and Google Play submission?

+

Yes — listings, screenshots, privacy declarations, review, and the rejections that come with them. Your accounts, your apps; we do the work.

How long does an app take?

+

It depends on scope, and the scoping sprint gives you a date in writing. A first release that shares a backend with an existing web platform is quicker than most people expect; one that needs the backend built too takes longer, and the plan says so.
